Vitamin D is often called the “sunshine vitamin”, but it behaves more like a hormone than a typical vitamin.
It is involved in calcium absorption, bone remodeling, muscle function, immune regulation and many processes throughout the body. Vitamin D receptors are found in a wide range of tissues, which is one reason vitamin D status can be relevant well beyond bone health.

When choosing a supplement, it is easy to focus only on the number on the label: 1,000 IU, 2,000 IU or 5,000 IU. But the form of vitamin D matters too.
Two supplements may both be described as vitamin D, yet contain different compounds — such as cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) or calcifediol monohydrate. They sit at different points in the vitamin D pathway, act differently in the body and cannot be compared using a simple IU conversion.
What is cholecalciferol?
Cholecalciferol is vitamin D3. It is the form made in the skin when ultraviolet B sunlight interacts with a cholesterol compound in the skin.
It is also the most common form found in vitamin D supplements, including capsules, softgels, tablets, sprays and liquid drops.
Vitamin D3 from sunlight, food or supplements is not immediately active. First, the liver converts cholecalciferol into 25-hydroxyvitamin D, also called calcifediol or 25(OH)D. The kidneys and other tissues can then convert calcifediol into calcitriol, the hormonally active form of vitamin D.
For many people, cholecalciferol is an appropriate and effective option for routine vitamin D supplementation and maintenance.
What is calcifediol monohydrate?
Calcifediol monohydrate is a supplemental form of calcifediol, also known as 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 or 25(OH)D3.
It is already one step further along the vitamin D pathway than cholecalciferol. In other words, it bypasses the initial liver-conversion step required by standard vitamin D3.
Calcifediol is also the main circulating form measured in a standard vitamin D blood test. When your practitioner requests a vitamin D level, the test usually measures serum 25(OH)D.
It is important not to confuse calcifediol with calcitriol. Calcifediol is not the final active hormone form; the body still regulates conversion to calcitriol according to its needs.

For standard cholecalciferol, the conversion is straightforward:
1 microgram vitamin D3 = 40 IU
10 micrograms vitamin D3 = 400 IU
25 micrograms vitamin D3 = 1,000 IU
